What makes a residence Green (ecologically sustainable and senstive)

Site Management

For new buildings or renovation and/or extending an existing building.

The site you choose to build your house on will benefit greatly with a little forethought and planning. This will save you time, money and energy as it will be easier to get the site back together once the house is built and all the tradesmen have left for the last time.

Plan your site
Have a look at the overall site and work out where materials and equipment can be placed with minimal disturbance to the existing ground and plants. Builders, tradesmen, contractors and workers all need access to the site but try to contain them to as much as possible. Explain to them what you are trying to achieve and most will work with you.

Waste Management
All construction generates a large amount of waste material. Renovations and extensions usually require at least partial demolishion of the existing building which can produce toxic waste. The disposal of the waste in the correct manner is vital for the good of the environment. Clean up waste materials a.s.a.p. and find a space where they can be stored before disposal. Everybody appreciates a clean and tidy workplace.

Plant Management
Minimise the damage to your site when you are building. If you can save and reuse an existing tree, shrubs and plants, you garden will benefit from plant that are used to local conditions. They can be stored in pots or containers on-site, ready to be replanted as soon as the ground is ready for them. Use part of your site as a living laboratory to find out what suits your soil type and local conditions. Also, have a look over the fence and see what is thriving next door or down the street.
